When we become aware of negativity and judgment, particularly towards ourselves, it’s time to change the channel in our minds.

Tuning in to a different channel - When we become aware of negativity and judgment, particularly towards ourselves, it’s time to change the channel in our minds.

I invite you to gently tune into the channel of acceptance and silence.

Here’s what I see happening on this channel...

We “welcome” our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, but they don’t run the show. Without judgment we observe where these thoughts, feelings, and emotions show up in our bodies.*

On this channel, there is a loop that we allow to run of waves. The waves are our thoughts, feelings, and emotions that come and go all day long. The waves roll up and then hit the sand of the seashore and then disappear back into the ocean kind of like this YouTube video https://youtu.be/WHPEKLQID4U Breathe in - A wave rolls up and hits the shore. Breathe out - the water retreats back into the ocean. Breathe in - A wave rolls up and hits the shore. Breathe out - the water retreats back into the ocean.

We’re okay on this channel. We’re not expected to be perfect. Comparison is discouraged instead of subconsciously used against us 24/7 like it is on most other channels. On this channel, we just exist and that is celebrated and more than okay.

Sometimes there is a lighthearted comedy and at other times there is compassion for our own and other people’s suffering.

When you tune in to the acceptance and silence channel, you go away with greater clarity and peace.

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
