In our current series of podcasts, we are exploring the topic of contemplation. What does contemplation mean and how does it impact the way we show up in the world? I’m hoping that these conversations will be a contemplative experience, so I invite you to join us, engage and be open as we discuss our guest’s spiritual journey and contemplative experiences.

Our guest today is...

Deb Steinkamp

Deb says, “I have been active in the contemplative, Christian community ever since I first experienced a sense of God’s constantly abiding presence with me. Dick Steinkamp and I have been married for 54 years. We love spending time with our 3 kids and 6 grandkids. We also enjoy travel, hiking, and kayaking. In all of that, and in my work as a Spiritual Director, I discover God’s loving presence."

Deb is a good friend and it is such a delight to talk with her to learn more about her journey and her views and experience with contemplation.

"'To Live in the Mercy of God' with Deb Steinkamp"

During this series, we have asked each guest to share a mediation. Deb reads a poem by Denise Levertov called "To Live in the Mercy of God."  She reads it twice. In the first reading, she invites us to just listen. In the second reading she invites us to notice what catches our attention, what feeling remains in our body, and how the poem has spoken to us today.

You can follow along and read a copyright version of 'To Live in the Mercy of God" here.

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
