Hints of Gladness

May 20, 2022

When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust,

equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

~ Mary Oliver ~

For 30 days (or more) I’m going to post and talk about the things that give me joy. I'm going to do my best to record hints of gladness especially when I go for my daily walks.

To sustain this, and what will hopefully become a habit, I have to keep it as simple as possible, so I’m not going to write or do anything too elaborate other than to briefly comment on what's making me glad and have a picture or two to go along with it.

Take good care,

~ Rod

P.S. If you'd like to join me, let me know. I would love to have some fellow travellers who are taking note of their hints of gladness. Email rod@hintsofgladness.com

Hints 5-20-22

Tan labs, always tan labs 🐕 😄

Of course birdsong, Always birdsong too.

Good tennis players. I walk by the tennis court almost every day and love to see good tennis players bashing the ball back and forth. It’s actually fun to see anyone out there and does produce a hint of gladness. I think the joy of play is infectious.

I’m told by my trail buddies that there might be bears in the area. I do see their wet paw prints going across the bridge. 🐻

Lots of morning greetings. So nice!

Salty sea air.

Seals and a gang of Mergansers and a morning moon

Afternoon hints…

Time spent with my coach and his willingness to go off script a little bit and do some creative business brainstorming with me. New course coming soon, ha!

What can I say? So good to be out here.

Puppies. Always puppies 🐶

Random thought. The work had never been the problem, necessarily. If there is a problem, the problem is me and my attitude toward work. How’s that for ending on bright and cheery? Hints of madness 😡 Ha!

Take good care,

~ Rod

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

I just want to bow 🙇‍♂️ in gratitude (also laugh because there’s a 🙇 bowing emoji)

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
