Hints of the Gladness - December 13, 2022 (More below)

I’m happy to be growing. to be stretching be to be challenged. I’m happy to live at a time when traditions cab questioned and explored.

A seagull making seagull noises.

I hear an eagle,

and then I look up into the tree

and I see it above me.

A beautiful baldy!

Hints of Sadness: Our family is grieving right now over the loss of our dear sister Mary (Mimi).

As I have thought about her over the past couple of weeks I am first of all grateful for her. She provided a place of refuge for Kathleen when she needed one and she was like a second mom to our kids. She didn't have that many people in her life, but those who were close to her she loved them well.

The water is calm on the inlet today.

I have come here to just be still

for a little while,

so that’s what I’m going to do!

Be still.

Hints of Gladness - December 9, 2022

Goosapalooza. So many ducks and geese today. Maybe 50 to 75 geese in this one area and about the same number of ducks as well.

A big freighter is coming down the inlet assisted by tugboats. It’s quite a sight!

A bit of an unusual site today when I saw a seal in Noons Creek. After that, a bald eagle flew up into a tree at the side of the inlet. It’s one of those mornings where nature is really active! (See photos)

I had a really nice chat with someone who does traffic control. They’ve been stationed on the trail where they’re doing some sewage pipeline work. She told me the story about how she tried to get home last Tuesday in the snow and ended up at a Sikh temple, where they fed her . Eventually, she met someone outside in a jeep who drove her home. Such kindness!

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

I just want to bow 🙇‍♂️ in gratitude (also laugh because there’s a 🙇 bowing emoji)

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
