Hints of Gladness: Gloom Away

So far, on this morning's walk I am enjoying the solitude. Granted, it’s still a tiny bit dark because I’m out here just  before sunrise. Plus, it’s raining a little bit which keeps the fair weather walkers inside.

Solitude enhances silence,

which in turn opens the door

to a deeper connection with what is.

Ahhh, what is.

On the other hand,

once I reach the Inlet

it is as alive as ever.

The sound of crows, geese, seagulls,

and other waterfowl

can all be heard at once.

Once I’m back on the trail, it’s quiet again.

All the bird noise fades into the distance

and into the background of my consciousness.

Foreboding

I have a bit of foreboding feeling

as far as my day is concerned.

I’m going to try and change that

with a little bit of mindfulness.

I would rather start the day

with some optimism and peace,

rather than the slight dread

I am feeling right now.

Later... Practicing appreciation

and sending some love to those I love

helps to get my eyes off myself

and feel more grounded.

Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly,

practicing appreciation and loving prayer

really helped this morning.

That's the lesson for me today:

get your eyes off yourself.

It's an hour after I wrote the above

and I still feel like the dread

and foreboding are gone. Grateful!

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
