Contemplation with Mary Wolfe

In our current series of podcasts, we are exploring the topic of contemplation. What does contemplation mean and how does it impact the way we show up in the world? I’m hoping that these conversations will be a contemplative experience, so I invite you to join us, engage and be open as we discuss our guest’s spiritual journey and contemplative experiences.

Our guest today is...

Mary Wolfe

I met Mary at a SoulStream gathering. SoulStream is a dispersed contemplative community whose mission is to nurture contemplative experience with Christ leading to inner freedom and loving service. We met quite a  number of years ago now (10 years ago?) and one of the highlights of every gathering for me is spending time in conversation with Mary. She’s such a warm, loving, caring and attentive person.

From what I know, Mary is a Spiritual Director, plays the harp, is an actor and an amazing storyteller, a passionate gardener, and artist. She recently started attending a Quaker gathering which is a return to her childhood spiritual roots. As far as service to the community, Mary is part of an organization that supports indigenous people who are in recovery.

Paying Attention with Mary Wolfe

During this series, we have asked each guest to share a mediation. Mary provides an outline for an exercise that you can do on your own as a way of being present and paying attention so that your sense of astonishment and the oneness of all things grows in you and can be shared, or not. Mary's meditation is included in the interview above and you can listen to just the meditation here...

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
