Hints of Gladness: Be Open and Notice

Hints of Gladness, January 8, 2023

Angst... No real ask this morning.

Had a good sleep.

Isn’t that interesting?

Lament… I’m concerned about US politics.

I try not to watch or let it rob me of peace.

May love somehow invade the hearts and minds

of US Congress.

Lament… inflation and the high price of rent and housing in parts of Canada.

People can no longer live where

they want to in this country.

It isolates families and individuals.

Isolation is a killer.

What can be done?

Hints… Six ducks standing on a log sleeping.

It just occurred to me that

what I’m doing with Hints of Gladness is

being open to joy and delight.

Taking note of what delights me

on a walk or jog (today it’s a jog)

wherever I happen to be.

Hints... A couple walking

in the rain under an umbrella.

Two other couples walking

under umbrellas in the rain.

It turns out this is a thing today.

Isn’t rowing a beautiful sport to watch?

(Short clip in video)

Contemplation... I don’t think it’s my place

to tell people what to think.

I want to encourage people to be open

and to notice what’s going on

in their own hearts and minds,

and to work that out

in the context of their own relationships and community.

Perhaps, not even perhaps,

one of the best things we can do is

ask good questions of ourselves and others.

They don’t even have to be good questions.

Just ask.

Hints… A fun conversation with Gordon.

Some people just know how to have

a fun conversation don’t they?

Whenever I talk to him,

I’m guaranteed to smile or

have a bit of a chuckle.

As I venture out this morning, I'm thinking about the Mary Oliver poem, wild Geese, where she says, “You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

I just want to bow 🙇‍♂️ in gratitude (also laugh because there’s a 🙇 bowing emoji)

For a period in my life I used to go to a particular place in a park not far from my house to meditate and pray. It was the beginning of a practice that I continue to practice to this very day, although this post is about a time when I took a break.

Our daughter Jess gifted me with a poem today. She says... Wrapping up my last few days on the coast for now… it’s been so amazing to get so much “normal” time with my family, and one of my favorite things is morning walks with dad. His practice of noticing and of being quiet enough in spirit to notice the minute details is always a gift.

I am contemplating emptiness this morning which I know sends cautionary shivers down the spines of some Christians. I was warned about this by a "well-meaning" Christian on the weekend when I used the word emptiness at a retreat I was co-leading.

Are sounds like this (birdsong, babbling brooks) meant to touch our souls? I think they are.
